Meditating On The Go

My husband and I love to watch Shark Tank.

It’s a great way to discover new products / inventions and on more than one occasion I have purchased or looked up something that was featured on Shark Tank. My newest “discovery” thanks to Shark Tank is from an episode that aired a few months ago about an app you can download on your phone called Simple Habit. It’s basically for people who want to meditate but never have the time.

I used to do yoga for many years in college and also did hot yoga for a few months with a friend. I loved how relax I would feel after each class because of the meditation sessions. Anyone who’s ever done yoga knows how expensive yoga classes can be. You also have to be really committed if you want to do yoga. For the price of the classes and committing to the classes, it just wasn’t worth it for me.

So when I was watching Shark Tank and saw this girl come and talk about Simple Habit and how you can mediate from pretty much anywhere for the amount of time you want, I was sold. It’s basically an app that you can download from any smart phone and you just meditate from there. The app is free and they have meditations that are also free, but not all of them. If you want to have unlimited access to all their meditation sessions, you have to pay. It’s about 15.49$/month if you want to pay monthly or if you want it for the year it comes down to 10.41$/month. I have the free version and honestly I don’t feel limited at all to their meditations because even with the free versions you have hundreds and hundreds of meditations available to you.

When you first sign up, they give you the Simple Habit Starter which is a seven-day meditation session to get you started up. You don’t have to take it if you don’t want to, I did just to get me back in the beat of meditation. They’re all about 5 minute sessions so it’s great if your busy and you don’t have too much time to spare. They have longer ones also if you want to meditate for a full 20-30 minutes.

What’s great about this app is that you can set-up a reminder so it notifies you when it’s time to meditate.

I set-up my reminder at 7:30 am which is the time that I’m in the bus on the way to work. I know what you’re thinking. You meditate with people sitting next to you? Don’t they notice? Actually, no. I’ll be honest, the first time I did it I wasn’t sure how it would be and if people would notice that I was meditating. But they didn’t. You just put on your headphones, close your eyes and listen to the voice. Most people in the morning tend to sleep in the bus, so it’s not completely unusual to have your eyes closed. As long as you don’t over exaggerate your in and out breaths at the beginning of each meditation, you should be able to meditate without anyone noticing. And it’s only five minutes, so it’s really not too bad.

file (1)My favorite feature of this app is definitely their On The Go section.

It basically asks you what you’re doing and how much time you have and it will give you a customized meditation based on your answers. I find that option great because it has a meditation just for that specific scenario. Whether you’re walking, you’re on break at work, you had a hard day and need some motivation or you’re having trouble sleeping, there’s a meditation designed just for that. It’s perfect for those really busy days when you just need like a five-minute break to relax, take a deep breath and refocus. I often find that in today’s world, we’re always running to go to work and we’re so busy with our lives that we often don’t give ourselves some time to just relax and “smell the roses” as they say. So being able to say you know what, I just need five minutes to not think about anything and just be.

Here’s a list of a few meditations that I tried and found really helpful for me, but again, there’s so many available sessions  that honestly, I would be surprised if you can’t find one that best suits you.

  • Improve Focus
  • Find Happiness
  • 31-Day Fresh Start
  • Sleep Better
  • Peaceful Evening
  • Be Here Now
  • Morning Meditation in Bed

So if you’re looking to meditate but you don’t want to go to the classes and want to be able to do it on your own time from wherever you want, be it at home, work or while commuting, make sure to download the app!
