I LOVE a good love story. Especially one that has you ugly crying towards the end. If you ask me, what makes a good romance author is one who is able to make her readers balling their eyes out. And let me tell you, I’ve read my fair share of love stories throughout the years, but only a few come to mind when I think about the ones that had me reaching for the tissue box. While I do cry easily in movies, it takes a lot for a book to make me cry.
Here are my top 5 books that have made me cry when it comes to love stories.
LOVE & OTHER WORDS, BY CHRISTINA LAUREN
Every time I think about this book, I tear up just a little bit. This book was absolutely fantastic. It’s really hard to find a novel that not only connects you on an emotional level, but also introduces topics such as second chances, grief, first love and acceptance of the past in such a beautifully written way.
When Macy and Elliot think of one another, it’s a bundle of emotions from tenderness, joy, sadness, anger and regret. It’s hard to believe that one person can have you feeling so many powerful emotions. But that’s who Macy and Elliot are in this flashback of a romance story that will sweep you off your feet, making you want to keep reading just so you find out what happens in the next chapter, and the chapter after that, and after that and so on…
This romance novel is not like your any day romance novel, that’s for sure. It’s the history that Elliot and Macy have that makes the reader completely captivated by it. That one mystery that makes you question “What happened to them?” is always there until the very end when everything becomes clear. You’ll be reaching for the tissue box on more than one occasion during this book so make sure to keep it close.
NEXT YEAR IN HAVANA, BY CHANEL CLEETON
I love it when a book is told in two different timelines with their own love stories that get intertwined. It’s like an extra bonus for me since I not only get one love story, but two! Next Year In Havana was that and so much more. I had hear mixed reviews about it so I started this book I would say on a pretty neutral level not sure what to expect. But boy was I surprised at how much I loved it. The book was a bit slow to start and there was a lot of history to learn, but once it picks up, you’re in for a ride.
This book goes back and forth in time from Elisa who finds loved during Cuba’s revolution era and Marisol, Elisa’s granddaughter who travels to Cuba 50 years later to spread her ashes. While there, Marisol also has her own love story. This book is emotional and at times heart breaking. Your heart will break for both Marisol and Elisa throughout the book as they face many challenges that has them questioning just how much you’re ready to risk for love. An absolutely fantastic book that will have you travelling back in time and in a country so rich with culture.
THE LIGHT WE LOST, BY JILL SANTOPOLLO
I was not ready to cry so much during this book. The last fifty or so pages had me balling my eyes out like crazy. My heart broke over a thousand times for the main characters in this book. Get out the tissue box because you will need it!
When Lucy and Gabe first meet at Columbia University, their lives will never be the same again. On a day that tragedy strikes the world, these two found comfort in each other. For over a decade, their paths will cross. While they always remain in each others lives, being together is not as simple. You never forget your first love, and that’s what Lucy and Gabe are to each other. Written so beautifully that it makes your heart melt, this love story is not like any other you’ve read. You will cry, you will get mad and at times you’ll want to stop reading out of the injustice of it all, but believe me, this is a book that you do not want to put down and that you will not soon forget.
THE HAPPY EVER AFTER PLAYLIST, BY ABBY JIMENEZ
How do you get over after losing the love of your life? And how do you even contemplate finding another love? This book will talk about both these sensitive topics. I first discovered Abby Jimenez last year with her first novel, The Friend Zone. This book is second in the series and I knew I had to pick it up after absolutely loving the first in the series.
To say that Sloane has had a difficult two years would be an understatement. After losing her fiancé in a tragic motorcycle accident just a few days before their wedding, she’s been fighting to make sense of her life. She then meets Jason who she ends up dog sitting for. After a series of flirtatious messages and a few dates, Sloane is unsure if Jason is the real thing or not. Is she ready to open her heart up again? And is Jason worth it?
My heart was aching so much for Sloane as you watch her trying to piece her life back together, getting over losing the love of her life and her fears of opening her heart back again. Definitely a tear jerker.
The Light Between Oceans, M.L. Stedman
This book was everything I imagined it would be and more! The Light Between Oceans is a love story like no other. And my god did I cry. I literally had to take breaks while reading this book just so I could get my emotions under control.
Tom, keeper of the lighthouse lives on a remote island where he can only travel to the mainland every other year. He marries Isabel, and together they live on the island. After several miscarriages and stillbirths, Isabel longs for the day she’ll be a mother. Then, one day, she hears a baby’s cries coming from a washed up boat. The man inside is dead and the baby, by some miracle is alive and well. Tom immediately wants to report the incident but Isabel begs him not to since she believes both parents are dead and what’s the point really since there is nothing more they can do. So. they raise the child as their own and when she turns two, they travel back to the shore land. There, they will learn that the child was never an orphan and there are people there who are still searching for her.
This book really explores the power of love and how far you will go to protect the ones you love and the sacrifices that people make out of love. Make sure to have the tissues near by because you will be feeling every single emotion this couple feels.
